Classical Civilisation

Intent

The OCR GCSE Classical Civilisation course offers students a broad, coherent, and intellectually rewarding exploration of the ancient cultures of Greece and Rome. Through the study of classical literature (in translation), visual and material culture, and thematic topics such as mythology, religion, war, gender, and society, students gain a deep understanding of the classical world and its enduring influence on modern life.

This qualification is designed to:

  • Foster cultural literacy by examining the foundations of Western civilisation through its art, architecture, literature, philosophy, and political systems.
  • Develop analytical and evaluative skills by encouraging students to interpret ancient sources, construct evidence-based arguments, and engage with historical contexts.
  • Promote critical thinking and empathy by exploring diverse perspectives from the ancient world, including the roles of women, religious beliefs, and societal structures.
  • Encourage comparative analysis between Greek and Roman cultures, helping students appreciate both the similarities and differences and their relevance to contemporary issues.

Students study a range of topics including:

  • Myth and Religion
  • Women in the Ancient World
  • The Homeric World
  • Roman City Life
  • War and Warfare

These units are carefully selected to ensure coverage of both literary and material culture, with at least 30% of the course focused on literature and 20% on visual/material sources.
