Raising awareness of Knife Crime: Charlie’s Promise

Published 14/07/2025

On Friday 11 July, students in Years 9 and 10 took part in an important and impactful presentation led by Martin Cosser, founder of the anti-knife crime organisation Charlie's Promise The presentation was delivered as part of our school’s ongoing commitment to educating our young people about personal safety and social responsibility.

Martin shared the deeply moving story of the tragic loss of his son, Charlie Cosser, who died as a result of knife crime in 2023. Through his presentation, students learned about the devastating consequences of carrying or using knives, not just for victims, but for families, friends, and entire communities.

He explored missed opportunities and encouraged young people to report any concerns for those who they know might be carrying knives anonymously to Crimestoppers/Fearless on 0800 555111 or online here

While the content was emotional and hard-hitting, it was delivered in a sensitive and age-appropriate manner that left a lasting impression on everyone who attended. Thank you to Martin for delivering such a memorable and meaningful message to our students.

Head of Personal Development, Mrs Harrison, reflected on the morning:

"The presentation was an example of how life-changing and impactful education can be. Martin’s powerful presentation was an opportunity for our students and staff to hear first-hand Charlie’s story and provoke thoughts around choices and consequences. Thank you to Martin for his time and bravery to tell his son's story with the aim to educate as many young people about the dangers of carrying a knife. It was incredibly moving to see many students take the time to personally thank Martin following the presentation. We look forward to welcoming Martin back to our school in the future."

Charlie’s Promise has now reached over 40,000 students, parents, and educators across the UK, and Martin’s work has been recognised nationally, including receiving the Pride of Britain Award in 2024. His collaboration with Sussex Police and the UK government highlights the importance and impact of this work in educating young people and tackling knife crime through prevention.

If any students feel affected by the issues discussed or would like further guidance, they are encouraged to speak with a member of our Student Support team.
