Uplands celebrates Science Week

Published 13/03/2026

This year's British Science Week theme is Curiosity: What's your question?, and our Science department brought that spirit to life with a fantastic week of hands-on workshops for students in Year 7-9.

Tuesday - Exploring the Night Sky

Mr Major led a brilliant session on star constellations, where students learned how to identify patterns in the night sky and even created their own planispheres. Now all we need is a clear night to try them out!

Wednesday - Science with LEGO

Mrs Richardson hosted an exciting workshop using brand-new LEGO Education SPIKE Prime Sets. These cutting-edge STEM resources combine LEGO bricks, sensors, and motors with Scratch and Python coding. Working in pairs, students designed and built dancing robots, showcasing their engineering and creativity skills.

Thursday - Engineering Inspiration & Heart Dissection

The day began with an inspiring virtual talk on engineering from an engineer working with virologists during PDT. Later, at lunchtime, students joined Mr Dwyer for a fascinating lamb's heart dissection, learning about the structure and function of this vital organ.

Friday - The Great Egg Drop Challenge

To end the week, led by Mr Bowman students put their creativity to the test by designing parachutes capable of lowering an egg safely to the ground.

A huge thank you to our amazing Science department for their enthusiasm, innovation, and for sharing their passion for science with our students.
