Year 7 Explore the Bayeux Tapestry with The British Museum

Published 15/10/2026

On 14 October Year 7 students had the exciting opportunity to take part in an online workshop delivered by The British Museum, celebrating the display of the Bayeux Tapestry in England as part of the commemoration of the 960th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

The workshop linked directly to the students' current History topic on Invaders, helping to bring their classroom learning to life. Through expert-led discussion and analysis of this remarkable historical source, students were able to deepen their understanding of the Norman Conquest and its significance in shaping English history.

The event was particularly special as it took place on 14 October, the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The workshop also had a strong local connection for our students. As Uplands is situated in East Sussex, close to the landscape where one of the most famous battles in English history was fought, students were able to appreciate how national events from the past continue to shape the history and identity of our local area.

Our Year 7 students engaged enthusiastically throughout the session, demonstrating excellent historical curiosity and knowledge. They interacted confidently with the presenters, asked thoughtful and relevant questions, and showed a genuine interest in the topics being discussed.

Mrs Underdown, Head of History, was delighted with the students' participation and praised both their engagement and exemplary behaviour throughout the workshop. The students represented the school superbly and made the most of this unique opportunity to learn from one of the world's leading museums.

We are delighted that our students were able to take advantage of this memorable learning experience and look forward to building on their knowledge as they continue their study of invaders and the impact they have had on Britain.
