Media Studies
Intent
GCSE Media Studies aims to develop students’ critical understanding of the media’s role in shaping contemporary society. Through the study of media products, industries, audiences, and contexts, students learn to decode messages, analyse representation, and understand the power dynamics behind media production. Our curriculum is designed to foster analytical thinking, creativity, and cultural awareness. Students engage with a wide range of media forms—from film and television to advertising, social media, and video games—developing both theoretical knowledge and practical production skills. The course encourages students to question what they see, hear, and share, empowering them to become informed, responsible media consumers and creators.
How our subject enriches personal development
Media Studies plays a vital role in personal development by encouraging students to explore identity, diversity, and global perspectives. It nurtures empathy and critical consciousness, helping students understand how media influences attitudes, values, and beliefs. The subject promotes collaboration, communication, and digital literacy—skills essential for life beyond the classroom. By producing their own media texts, students gain confidence, express their creativity, and develop a sense of agency. Ultimately, Media Studies equips learners with the tools to navigate and shape the media-saturated world around them with integrity and insight.
